about

Emily said she needed some epic music for the bikers conquering the highest peak of RAAM. I played around with a classic vim-IV-I-V progression, decided it sounded best for in Bm for this purpose, and recorded two takes of spontaneous builds and drops, called "Epic A" and "Epic B." After Emily used clips of these in the film, I realized the complete tracks had too much maxed out static to be useful on their own, but they were too much a part of the film to leave out of the soundtrack. So I went back over my original two recordings and combined them into a more deliberate composition.

"Ascent &" represents the first part of biking a large mountain. The first movement is the beginning, where the cost is ascertained. The second movement is the long pull, or the main part of the ascent. The third movement is the brief and precious respite at the peak - the "&".
